Professor Herman Goossens graduated as MD in 1982 at the Free University of Brussels. He is Professor of Microbiology at the University of Antwerp and Director of the Dept. of Clinical Pathology of the University Hospital, Antwerp. He also has a part-time position at the University Medical Center Utrecht. Professor Goossens has more than 800 papers published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Professor Goossens was elected first chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance. He is the initiator of the annual European Antibiotic Awareness Day. He was/is the coordinator of several large EU funded projects, such as ESAC,GRACE, PREPARE, RAPP-ID, LAB-Net of COMBACTE-Net, ECRAID-Plan, and VALUE-Dx. His professional goal is to bridge the gap between basic and clinical research, to enhance the standard of healthcare, public health and professional standards, for the good of the public in large.
