Webinar on Adaptive Trials: From Theory to Practice
The webinar on 'Adaptive Trials: From Theory to Practice' is organised by Ecraid's STAT-Net in collaboration with ERS, and concludes the Ecraid Training Modules on Adaptive Clinical Trial Designs. Taking place on 10 July, 11:00 AM CEST.
Topics
Adaptive clinical trial designs (including: seamless trials, group sequential design, sample size re-estimation, response adaptive randomisation and platform trials) in the setting of a respiratory infection. The one-hour webinar format consists of a 45 minutes interactive discussion, followed by a 15-minute Q&A session.
Learning Objectives
After following the webinar, participants should be able to:
- Describe the most relevant types of adaptive trial designs.
- Explain the advantages and disadvantages of different types of adaptive trial designs.
- Understand the process of how to choose the most suitable clinical trial design.

Speakers
Two experts in adaptive clinical trial designs (Sofia Villar and Peter van de Ven - pictured on upper row) and a clinician with experience in adaptive clinical trial designs (David Paterson - pictured lower right), will walk the audience through the process of planning a trial for a specific respiratory infection example.
The session will be moderated by Marlieke de Kraker from Ecraid’s STAT-Net.
Educational relevance
Infectious diseases are an important global concern, but traditional randomised controlled trials lag behind what is needed in terms of rapid development of diagnostics, vaccines, and treatments. In particular, fixed trial designs cannot adapt to rapidly evolving research findings and treatments, hindering their utility in the context of an emerging pathogen.
In contrast, adaptive trial designs offer a compelling alternative where trial parameters can be modified during the trial, based on pre-specified rules, to respond to emerging research findings.
The Ecraid Training Modules on Adaptive Clinical Trial Designs introduced several different types of adaptive designs and discussed their advantages and limitations. This webinar will bring the online modules to a close, by having experts in the field discuss the process of choosing an adaptive trial design for a specific respiratory infection example. Several variations will be explored, and the most suitable adaptive design will be discussed for each.
Target Audience
The webinar is for those who have already completed the six online training modules, as well as those with an interest, or experience, in clinical research or clinical trials with basic statistical knowledge, and an interest in innovative trial designs. Completion of the online training modules is recommended but not a prerequisite for participation.
